Originally named as “Sky River”, Songhua River was cradled from the “Sky Pool” of Changbai Mountain. There was a beautiful legend in the ancient time that during years of flood, the water in the “Sky Pool” flew down, leading other rivers, crossing mountains and valleys, through forests and plains and galloped thousands of Li. Jilin city is the only city that has the same name of its province, and one of the 32 metropolises. It is located in the middle south of northeast China, transitional area between Changbai Mountain and Songliao Plain with its topography gradually sloping down from southeast to northwest, thus forming four physiognomies of mountainous region-hill-gorge and lake-plain. It has temperate humid climate, with distinctive four seasons and plenty of precipitation rainfall at an annual rainfall of 700 mm on average. It covers an area of 27,120 square km, of which the central area is 3,636 square km. Within its jurisdiction, there are 4 urban areas, 4 prefecture-level cities, 1 county, 1 national-level high and new technology industrial development zone and 1 economic and technological development zone. Composed of 35 nationalities of Han, Man, Korean, Hui, Mongolian, etc, it has a total population of 4.5 million of which the population in the central area is 2 million.
It has a long history, plenty of accumulated heritages and culture. Since as early as the paleolith period 60,000 years ago, human kind began to multiply and live on this fertile soil by fishing, hunting, tilling and farming. In Zhou Dynasty and Qin Dynasty, a lot of Sushenren, ancestor of Man nationality, lived in Jilin in concentrated communities. Since early Xihan Dynasty, there came forth some local regimes of ethnic minority such as Fuyu, Gaojuli and Bohai, etc., which were subjected to the administrative jurisdiction of the central government. The Ming Dynasty and Qing Dynasty set up factories to build ships in Jilin City, which was first called “Shipyard”, and which was later changed into Jilinwula(meaning city beside river in Man language). In Kangxi 12, Qing Dynasty(1673), Jilin city was set up and became the center of politics, economy and culture in northeast China at that time, and it was also an important fortress of water and land, a town of military importance. Through winding development in different periods, national culture in this region has accumulated greatly and large quantity of historical cultural relics and historic sites have been remained and reserved. It is the cradle of the prehistoric culture and one of the important birthplaces of Man nationality, and it is also a well-known city of its national-level history and culture.
One splendid river, three blue lakes, four unique mountains. Assembled with thousands Li of water, Songhua River runs across the urban areas, winding along; three fresh water lakes (Fengman, Hongshi and Baishan) lie as terraces; Longtan Mountain, Xiaobai Mountain, Zhuque Mountain, Xuantianling and other green mountain systems create some effectiveness. The circling river and surrounding mountains form a natural scenery of “Four sides are green mountains while three of them are close to water; it is a city of mountain while half of it is river.” Owing to the particular characteristics of natural scenery, it is well known to the world as “City beside river in north China”, an excellent tourist city in China.
Vast in territory, fertile in fields and luxuriant in forest, good products from the earth are nature's treasures. The domestic water system is very developed. There are 18 rivers whose drainage area surpass 500 square km, and 372 rivers whose drainage area is over 20 square km. Per capita water resource amounts 3,875 cubic meters, accounting for 1.8 times of average national level, and 5.4 times of that in northern cities. There are various kinds of species in Changbai Mountain, where its area is 1.55 million ha., and storage capacity of the forest is 155 million cubic meters, with a vast storage of 73 items and more than 2,400 kinds of plants, 15 sections and 50 kinds of fishes, 20 sections and 75 kinds of beasts, 48 sections and 277 kinds of birds, and forest frog and other amphibians, reptiles and insects. It is very rich in mineral resources with 171 kinds discovered. The reserve of 43 kinds of minerals have been proved up, among which the product of nine minerals including nickel, molybdenum, olivine etc. rank the first ten in the country, and the potential value of mineral resources is 1465 billion yuan. It is a major producing place and exchanging center of natural green special local products of Changbai Mountain. It is unique that it has abundant water and electricity unlike other northern cities.
The position is superior with interlaced roads and extension in all directions. As a center of Northeast Asian Economy Circle, it not only radiates the northeast, but also extends to the inner land and DPRK, Korea, Japan, and Russia etc, in a word; it has been a transportation hub since the old times. Highways link many cities all around the country; railways can directly reach Changchun, Shenyang, Haerbin, Tianjing, Beijing and etc; regular flights are available to and from some central cities, namely Haikou, Sehnzhen, Beijing, Dalian and Haerbin; water transportation and natural gas pipeline delivery are also very developed. It is regarded as one of the five integrated transportation hubs that have complete forms of transportation in the northeast.

In petrochemical industry, there are Jilin Chemical Corp, Jilin branch of Sino Petrochemical Corp, Jilin Chemical Fiber and a series of chemical enterprises of profound processing. They produce more than 1,000 types of products including synthetic material, basic organic chemistry, refining, and chemistry fibers. The automobile industry has been developing to a mode of internationalization, privatization; it has been extending into diversiform branches and forming a cluster groups of types. And a series of related industries have grown up. They can male 60,0000 per year and their products including light bus, mini-bus, economical car, special automobile, agricultural truck and their spare parts. For metallurgical industry part, there are the biggest carbonate enterprise, the biggest ferroalloy factory of China, Jilin aluminum industry and the second in scale nickel industry base of China. Jilin Jianlong iron-steel Corp can produce 2000,000 iron and steel per year. They are the backbone of the industry of Jinlin. In the field of agricultural products further processing and food making, some more than 20 well-known firms such as Jilin Industrial Alcohol, Huarun Beer, Changbai wine industry, wahaha food, Longdin drinks, ete, have grown up. In pharmacy industry and building materials industry, there are also many large scaled firms that play important role in its own trade. A series of large power stations with a stalled capacity of 4,000,000 kilowatt control the life of power supplying of Jilin. Such as Baishan, fengman, Hongshi hidropowers and Jilin, Hada thermal power stations. The development of tow neo-industries, IT and new materials, are accelerating. A modern industrial system has been founded: its backbone industries are petrochemical industry, automobile making industry, metallurgy industry, and further agriculture products processing industry and food making industry; medicine making industry, light spinning and weaving industry, building material industry and power industry are its advantages; IT and new materials are its rising-sun industries.
With its good agriculture condition, it is an ecologic city where industrialized agriculture is actively designed and developed. As a “Tridimensional Resource Treasury” of biosphere natural protection zone of the world, Jilin City has outstanding superiority in natural ecological resources, providing vast space for industrialization development and green agriculture. In recent years, in combine with industrial demand, consuming demand and export demand, we have continuously been deepening the adjustment of agriculture structure. Animal husbandry, vegetable, herbal medicine, edible fungus have advanced to industrialization, greater scale and export-oriented. The grain planting has developed towards improving seeds, using for special purpose, and high quality, among which the output of high quality grain for special purpose accounts for 80 per cent over the total grain output. The agriculture structure with industrialized special function has played its role rapidly. To continuously strengthen the construction of water and forest systems, put emphasis on water project, project of returning plough to forest, and project of three north shelter forest, etc., and the coverage rate of forest has reached 57 per cent. We have been developing and building six series one hundred important projects including millions of bulls and beef product processing, 500,000 tons corn deep processing, 200,000 tons diary product, and there appear a lot of backbone's leading enterprises that are in accordance with demands of green, safety, health and export, such as Jiuniu Diary Plant, Chunguang Livestock Farming, and Jilin Yili etc., and there are more than 230 famous, excellent, new and special products that are exported to more than 50 countries and regions. Therefore, the agricultural industrialization and standard producing system have been formed rapidly.

Jilin is a well-kown city comfortable in various seasons and especially famous for its large-scale travel industry. With its ShanShui Forest and Snow-Ice Bloom as specialities, natural sceneries and human cultural spots shine on each other, which forms travel advantage with its inborn sightseeing, entertainment, customs and historical culture. It has been a summer resort and winter heaven for skiing, for which Jilin has been set in the list of national 31 key travel cities. There are more than 80 scenery spots. Jilin foggy ice bloom as one of Chinese Four Natural Wonders, Jilin Cloud Stone as the King Cloud Stone of the World, SongHua Lake as famous national scenery spot, Zhuque Mountain both as Zoo and Arboretum, Beida Lake Skiing and rectilineal church, Gao Ju Li ancient relics, Wula ancient city, Jilin Joss House and North Hill Old Joss House, they are unique and special natural and cultural scenery spots, and very enchanting and famous throughout the world. The travel service center has complete facilities with right functions, and 35 star hotels with 33100 beds. There are 40 travel agencies, among which 4 are international travel agencies. 10 Large Shopping Centers like Big Luck Supermarket, International Trade Center, Oriental Department store and so on are on the 10 modern business roads. The annual Jilin Foggy Ice Bloom Festival, Songhua Lake Kaijiang Fish Delicious Food Festival, ChangBai Mountain Golden Autumn Maple Leaves Festival, Songhua Lake Summer Travel Festival are five famous festivals. During these years, we taking market as our direction and government as our controller, travel industry has been adjusted, systematically designed and operated so that tourist economy shows strong growing impetus. The number of the tourists home and aboard has been increased by 38% and the gross income has risen by 52.1% on the average every year.

With nice living environment, Jilin is an international flower city which has speeding up construction and development. The rate of tap water popularization is 94.2%, centralized heat supply 51% and the gas 92.8%. Through the program of “clean water and green trees”, 57 kilometers of city coastal area has been revitalized with green trees becoming the famous city biological corridor, scenery spot and glamourous classic. Longtan Mountain, Zhuque Mountain, North Hill forest parks and city parks are very colorful; Century Culture Square, Linjiangmen square, Joss House Square and other five big entertainment green scenery spots are quite beautiful; Park road, district parks, small yards spread about the city. 37% coverage rate of virescence has been realized. The greenbelt area per person has been 70,000 square meter. The quality of water source maintains above level 2. The environmental noise has been controlled within 55 decibel. Jilin turns out to be one of the most comfortable city in the north.

And there are 5 television broadcast network whose cultural industrial system is shaping in the forms of the television broadcasting, newspapers, magazines, culture, sports entertainment, the Songhua Lake root carving and paper-cutting. The gymnasiums with the capacity of 10 or 50 thousand people, international fair centers, showing centers, civic sightseeing towers and the modernized scientific museum are coming into use or under construction.

Some large home enterprises like Huarun beer, Jidong cement, Jili group and Tongyi group also locate in Jilin province.
